Campaign for Real Medicine
More and more consumers are turning to natural therapies; many of these, such as herbal medicine, have been tried and tested for hundreds of years. Despite this, natural medicine is under pressure. Of course there is a need to protect consumers through appropriate regulation - but one can only wonder at the motives for what many see as a coordinated and heavy handed campaign against natural approaches in general.
The Campaign for Real Medicine is coordinated by the Herbal Apothecary as a way of supporting and protecting natural medicine in the face of these challenges.
Two years ago David Bellamy launched our Campaign For Real Medicine. Real medicine, we believe, is a continuum ranging from the Art of Healing through to the Healing Arts.
The Art of Healing disciplines include those evidence based and regulated therapies such as Herbalism, Ayurvedic Medicine, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Naturopathy, Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Aromatherapy, Counselling and Psychotherapy.
The Healing Arts include those equally therapeutic but less formally regulated practices, such as: Tai Chi, Singing, Reiki, Poetry, Cooking, Gardening etc. Some may dispute which end of the continuum some therapies belong, but few would argue that there is such a continuum. Real Medicine is what is appropriate for the individual.
The Campaign For Real Medicine is working with a broad range of organisations and consumer groups including the new College of Medicine set up by Prince Charles. The campaign aims to support the rights of professionals to practise appropriately regulated therapies and the rights of consumers to choose.
