Independent Living Scheme

The Independent Living Scheme is part of York Council for Voluntary Service, a not-for-profit charitable organisation. Funded by North Yorkshire County Council, the service is completely independent and the advice and support provided is completely impartial.

 

The Scheme provides FREE information and advice about Direct Payments and the Personal Assistance Scheme, helps you find the right person to work for you, provides a full payroll service if you need it, helps you to keep things legal if you employ someone, tells you about training opportunities, helps you find places to go for a break and helps you to find equipment that you might need.

Jigsaw

Support group for parents and cares of children who are on the Autistic Spectrum or who have ADHD. Monthly meetings, in the Interactive family room (1 The Archway, Skinner Street, Whitby, YO21 3AJ) to provide the opportunity to talk to other cares and share information.

Larpool Lane - Day Centre

The Day Centre aims to provide a service which meets the needs of carers and service users alike. It provides emotional and physical support to enable people to remain in the community with the help of statutory and voluntary organisations. Carers are encouraged to be involved, voice their needs and help in the decision making. The centre can provide transport as well as lunch and tea. During the day activities and trips are organised. Referral to the Day Centre is by a Care Manager (Adult & Community Services, Tel: 0845 034 9410).

Learning Disability Service

A team of health professionals offering a broad based service to children and adults with learning disabilities/ severe developmental delay, their families and carers. They also work closely with social services. The multi-disciplinary team provide packages of care to meet the health needs of individuals of all ages and offer advice and support to carers, thus enabling people with learning disabilities to pursue lifestyles of their choosing.

The Legal Services Commission looks after legal aid in England and Wales and is the responsible office for ensuring that people get the information, advice and legal help they need.

 

Community Legal Service (CLS) - for civil matters. CLS provides information about eligibility for legal aid, looking for legal advisors and solicitors who will undertake legal aid work, information leaflets. If you qualify for legal aid the Helpline will give free advice about benefits, tax credits, housing, employment, debt and education problems. 

 

Criminal Defence Service (CDS) - for criminal matters. Helps people who are under investigation or facing criminal charges.

 

Legal Services Solicitors who provide a free 15 minute initial consultation, not legal advice.

Lions Message in a Bottle Scheme

Message in a Bottle - a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details in a common place where they can be easily found in an emergency. The plastic bottle is kept in the fridge where emergency services would expect to find it in the event of being called to your home. They will know you have a bottle by two labels, one fixed on the inside of the front door or main entrance into your home and the other to the door of your fridge.

 

The service is free. The distinctive plastic bottles can be obtained from health centres, doctors’ surgeries, some chemists, Whitby DAG or by contacting local Lions Clubs, c/o Age Concern, Scarborough & District.

Lobster Pot Creche

Offers quality child care by experienced, qualified staff, for a maximum of 20 children aged from birth to 5 years of age. Attendance on sessional basis.

 

Registered with the Department of Education and Skills as a provider of Nursery Education. Under current law every 4 year old and some three year olds are entitled to five free two and a half hour sessions of nursery education each week.

Low Vision Clinic

Clinics held once or twice a month on Tuesdays to assess aids suitable for sight-impaired people. Referral by GP.

M D Mobility Ltd

Provides a range of products including manual and powered wheelchairs, 3 and 4 wheel scooters, riser chairs, and adjustable beds, toilet aids, small aids and products including incontinence items.
