Cruse Bereavement Care

Cruse Bereavement Care exists to promote the well-being of bereaved people and to enable anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss. The organisation provides counselling and support.  It offers information, advice, education and training services.

Dalewood Trust

Dalewood is a charitable Trust currently running day services for adults with learning disabilities living in Whitby and the surrounding areas. Various activities are offered such as gardening, craft, woodwork, sport, adult education, keep fit, personal hygiene programmes, social and domestic training.

 

We can also offer specialist care in our 'special care unit' which offers a variety of activities for people with profound and complex disabilities. We can offer assistance with individual needs such as benefits and personal care.

 

Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy can also be made available through Scarborough Health Trust.

 

Charges for our services are in line with current NYCC Adult and Community Services Policy.

Dalewood Trust - Laundry Scheme

Laundry scheme for elderly people run in conjunction with Adult and Community Services Home Care Service. Contact the office for more details.

Dalewood Trust - Shopping Service

Employment training initiative to help people with a learning disability, giving people the opportunity to prepare for full employment in the community.

 

The Shopping Service is for elderly and disabled people who have difficulty in shopping for themselves. Lists are collected from customers' homes on a pre-arranged day of the week, shopping is carried out at Somerfield supermarket in Whitby and checked by the Supervisor. On delivery the customer pays the amount shown on their itemised till receipt.

 

There is a small charge made for the service. Customers can be referred by Adult and Community Services, GPs, voluntary groups, on the recommendation of existing customers or by contacting Dalewood Trust directly.

 

Day Hospital

Fully integrated day hospital service which operates from Monday to Friday. It is supported by physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists to meet the patients' needs. Patients are referred via their own GP and are at the Day Hospital for a limited time only, for some specific treatment or assessment. Transport to and from the day hospital can be arranged.

Diabetes UK (Northern and Yorkshire)

Information and support for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes. Contact the Darlington office for further information on local groups.

Diabetes UK Scarborough Voluntary Group

The Diabetes UK Scarborough Voluntary Group reformed as from 31 May 2006 to provide the following services:

 

To give support to diabetic patients and their carers; Develop better treatment of Diabetes by lobbying those persons/ organisations with the power to make changes; Exchange information and ideas to assist patients with better control of their condition; Fundraise towards any equipment which is considered to be necessary.

 

The Group aims to hold public meetings on a bi-monthly basis. Contact for further details.

Disabled Children’s Services Team (North Yorkshire County Council Adult and Community Services)

The Team provides a statutory service to disabled children and their families in the Whitby, Ryedale and Scarborough area. The Team responds to families in need of support or help to access practical support in the home, play and leisure activities, breaks from caring for a disabled child, advice and support.

Disabled Facilities Grant (private property)

Means tested grant for disabled people, or someone living with a disabled person, towards the cost of providing adaptations and facilities to enable the disabled person to continue to live there.

 

As from 31/12/05 a means test is no longer required when the disabled person is a child.

 

Applicant must either be the property owner or tenant, and does not have to be the person with a disability. Eligible works may include widening doors and installation of ramps, installation of stair lifts, installation of disabled showers, providing a downstairs bathroom, adaptation of heating and lighting controls.

 

To apply for the grant, it is necessary to consult Occupational Therapy at

 NYCC Adult and Community Services - an Occupational Therapist will arrange an assessment of need and pass on recommendations to Scarborough Borough Council.

 

The grants process is managed by the Home Improvement Agency (see separate entry page 71 ).
