Macmillan Nurses

Macmillan Nurses are trained to give emotional and physical support to patients with cancer and their carers. They offer advice on management of symptoms and work closely with the patient's own GP. Patients can be seen at any time during their illness, from diagnosis onwards. Macmillan Nurses have time to spend with patients and their carers and families to help them to cope with the effects of their illness and treatments.


Requests for a Macmillan Nurse can be made via the GP, District Nurse, Consultant or Ward Sister. Individuals may contact the service directly if preferred.

Marie Curie Nursing Service

 This service is available for patients who are terminally ill with cancer. It is a supplementary service to that provided by the District Nursing Team. Marie Curie Nurses provide care within the patient's own home.


Referral via the District Nursing Service.


Martin House Hospice for Children & Young Adults

Situated in Boston Spa, there are nine single bedrooms for children in Martin House and six in Whitby Lodge for young adults as well as family accommodation.


Referrals considered from anywhere in the old Yorkshire Health region, for children and young adults who have a progressive life limiting disorder/ illness. The aim is to provide a home from home for both the child and family, offering friendship, support and practical help.


Provides help and advice at home and short term stays for sick children, young adults and their families, symptom control, terminal care (in Martin House or at home) and bereavement support.

Mencap - Scarborough and District

Provides practical services for children with learning disabilities and their families including support and information service for families, weekly support group for parents/ carers at Brookleigh on Wednesday mornings (children welcome), play days during school holidays with professional/ qualified play leaders, a varied programme of activities all year (trips, parties, discos, horse riding, drama), disco club every Friday for people aged 16-60, tea time service (up to 7pm) for young people over 14yrs to bridge the gap between school and evening clubs or to give parents a break, day care for older members (40yrs upwards).

Mental Health Services

Spinnaker Lodge provides a service for people over the age of 65 with mental health problems. There are eight in-patient beds for assessment. Respite care and day care facilities are provided Monday to Friday, 10am to 4.30pm.


Initial contact with the unit is by referral from Whitby Community Mental Health Team for the Elderly via a client's GP. The Consultant Psychiatrist for older people in Whitby must be informed. The unit has its own transport for clients who are physically fit enough to use it, otherwise ambulance transport can be arranged. The small friendly unit aims to provide as flexible a service as possible to suit clients and carers

Mind - Circle of Friends Scarborough, Whitby & Ryedale

The Circle of Friends is designed to offer practical and emotional support that good friends offer. The aim is to introduce you to a volunteer who will be able to provide the following support:-Emotional, Practical, Social support, Advocacy, Information.

Motor Neurone Disease Association

National Charity (England, Wales & Northern Ireland) working to help people with Motor Neurone Disease secure the care and support they need. Services provided include - national helpline, care centres, information and advice, equipment loan service, befriending service, training and support for health care professionals, local support.

Multiple Sclerosis Club

A group for people with Multiple Sclerosis, their partners, carers and friends. Meets on the third Thursday of each month, 2pm - 4pm at Marton Court, Whitby.


It is a social club with board games, refreshments and conversation. Most meetings have a speaker. Outings and an annual Christmas lunch are arranged. Transport from home is provided where necessary.

Multiple Sclerosis Society of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Multiple Sclerosis national organisation promoting research and giving information and support. Produces Carers Pack and various information booklets.

The Helpline is there to help anyone affected by MS, whether you are newly diagnosed, have lived with the condition for many years, or are a carer, relative or friend. The Helpline provides emotional support; information on a range of issues including treatments, symptoms, coping strategies, employment, benefits, social care and health care; signposting to other organisations.

National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease (NACC)

The National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease (NACC) brings together people of all ages who have Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s Disease, their families and the health professionals involved in their care.


NACC provides a range of services and support through our 70 Groups, the NACC-in-Contact Support Line and individual welfare grants; an Information Service by telephone and email; facts about Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD); a range of Information Sheets on specific topics; guidance on disability benefits; articles on IBD research.

NACC also invests in research (medical, social and psychological).
